Merit Badges
It is up to the individual Scout to choose what badges he would like to work on and the rate of his progress. There is a list of required Merit Badges a scout must earn as part of the Eagle Scout Requirements, these are listed in the
Scout Handbook (page 188).

On occasion, Merit Badge Counselors will offer a particular Merit Badge (usually Eagle Required) to everyone in the Troop.
The Counselor will usually announce this at a Troop Meeting.
Listen for these Opportunities !

Merit Badge Counselors Wanted
Is there a Merit Badge you could help a Scout earn?
Each Merit Badge needs a Counselor to guide the Scout through the requirements and sign off on them once they have been completed. Parents can not sign off Badge requirements as they did in Cub Scouts.
Your expertise in any of the over 100 Merit Badges offered could be the result of Professional Experience, a Hobby or just an interest in the subject. Merit Badge Requirement books, which can be purchased at the Scout Store, or Web sites like meritbadge.com list all the requirements and give you most of the information/ideas you would need to help a Scout earn a Merit Badge.

Applications for becoming a Meit Badge Counselor can be found on the "Misc. Forms" page of this website.

Merit Badges
Once you determine the Merit Badge you would like to work on -

your first step should be to contact a Uniformed Leader (Mr. Candell, Mr. Moritz, etc) and get a signed Merit Badge Card.

Once you have this card, you may contact the Merit Badge Counselor for the Merit Badge you wish to work on. A full list of the current Troop 139 Merit Badge Counselors can be found on the "Misc Forms" page of this website.

The Counselor will arrange a time and place to meet you - to discuss the requirements and offer direction where necesary.

Once the Counselor is satisfied you have completed all the requirements,
They will sign your Card.

The counselor will keep 1/3 of the card, giving you the other 2/3's. Both these pieces must be turned in to Mr Candell. Once he signs the Merit Badge Card, he will return 1/3 of the card to you !

---IMPORTANT ---
DO NOT LOSE THESE CARDS.

Some boys purchase a 3 Ring binder and use “Collectable Card” sleeves to keep them organized. The Troop and Council will have records of the Merit Badges you earned, but should a discrepancy occur, you will have proof of your accomplishments. This information is most important when applications are being sent to Council for Eagle rank.
