Military History Trip, March 17 & 18, 2007 Military History Trip, March 17 & 18, 2007

Fort McHenry/USS Taney, Baltimore Harbor, MD As we counted down the days to out trip, the weather was great, average of sixty-five degrees and sunny, until Friday that is, then it turned cold and the sleet started coming down. Sixteen hours later we had six inches of sleet and ice on the ground, cars and roads. All this white caused us to rethink our trip and explore other options. The first decision was when to leave, if at all, so we decided on a two hour delay just like school to let the roads clear up, which they did. The next consideration was should we go to Aberdeen Museum considering much of the museum is outdoors in a big field, meaning snow, mud, cold and wind. So we considered another option Fort McHenry, scene of the Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812 and where our national anthem was composed.

Harper’s Ferry - 2006 Bike Trip
by Jon P . Acting Senior Patrol Leader

On our bike trip we traveled 17 miles, it was probably the best bike trip that I have ever been on. We got to do some down-hill riding and best of all, some off-road mountain biking. We rode up and down huge dirt trails. After we had gone 3 miles out of our way, we found the battlefield. On our ride, we got to see some monuments as Mr. Detwiler told us about the battle. It was amazing looking out from on top of the highest hill and seeing all of the land where the actual battle once took place. Riding along the Potomac River and canal was great and very relaxing. It was great just watching the water flow and the sun shine on the water. We stopped for lunch at a lock on the canal. But the turning point that made it the greatest for me was looking out on the water where the three rivers meet and looking down into the water from the bridge as we walked our bikes across. During down time in the evening, it was nice to just sit around the campfire talking and relaxing. On Sunday, we watched a movie and learned the history about the battlefield. At the shop, we could look around and buy some souvenirs. It was just a fun trip as well as a very amazing learning experience!

Bike Trip, May 5-7, 2006
The Troop took a 22 mile bike ride along the Lehigh River. It was a great day for a ride and all Scouts completed the course... Friday and Saturday nights we camped at Mauch Chunk County Park, 4 miles outside of Jim Thorpe.

NJ Camporee - Great Adventure, NJ - April 21-23, 2006
The Troop attended the 12th Annual Great Adventure Boy Scout Camporee. We camped on the Six Flags Park’s property, but no, not in the Wild Safari Park. On Saturday the Scouts enjoyed the rides during the morning hours, then returned to camp where they were able to work on one of two different Merit Badges.

Skills & Advancement Weekend - March 17-19, 2006
The March Troop trip was held at Camp Ockanickon and the theme was Skill and Advancement. The trip is geared to the new and younger Scouts to learn new skills and progress in rank. The Cobra Patrol (new Scouts) had a very successful trip completing many requirements. They learned knots, flag etiquette, how to us woods tools (knife, axe and saws), how to hike safely, started on the physical fitness requirement, the buddy system, and much more. Older Scouts worked on Rank requirements as well.

Well, as you know, March weather can be very un-predictable and it was. Where early in the week it was 70 degrees - on the weekend it stayed in the 30’s and went into the low 20’s at night. So we might not have had our winter camping experience in January (50 degrees) but we certainly did in March !
